📍takoyaki, dotonburi, osaka one of my fav thin 📍takoyaki, dotonburi, osaka

one of my fav things about dotonburi is their takoyaki and tbh the takoyaki I have had there have always been consistently good regardless of the store imo. this one was located near the store with a huge crab sign (I didn’t note the exact shop name🤡). soft and delicious with a generous portion of sauce, mayo and bonita flakes. the classic is never a let down tho they had some variations with respect to the sauce and toppings. but the classic takoyaki sauce with mayo is always my fav. this is always a must have at dotonburi. there is another stall that does a it with an egg where they play a runny egg with green onions doused on top of the takoyaki which was also decadent. but just go to one that has a queue and most likely, it won’t be a let down 😉😘🤤

📍tempura tarajiro, dotonburi, osaka this is lo 📍tempura tarajiro, dotonburi, osaka

this is located along one of the alleys away from the main dotonburi area and it was a random find and we were scouring the area for some dinner. the menu is such that you can pick and choose what tempuras you want and they’re freshly fried right in front of you. i had mine with a glass of suntory whisky neat.

we selected a variety of tempuras which included the classic shrimp, lotus root, mochi (my first time trying mochi tempura and it was good!), sweet potato, fish cake, shrimp and a couple more that I can’t fully recall hehe. it was fried to perfection without being too oily and was not at all heavy on the stomach. highly recommend if you’re in the area and looking for a tempura fix or a hearty dinner. it also seemed relatively popular amongst locals as there were a number of japanese salarymen having dinner with colleagues or alone there when we were there!
📍merci marcel, tiong bahru my second time here 📍merci marcel, tiong bahru
my second time here and i enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. so far, i’ve yet to try a dish from them i found disappointing.

1. french ratatouille
when this dish was served, i almost mixed it up with shakshouka. there are some similarities but this is served in a bowl where you can dip in deeper and it’s not as sizzling hot as a shakshouka. the dish has a nice tangy taste thanks to the bell peppers and onions and the poached eggs that oozes out makes it a decadent dish indeed. it also makes a good vegetarian option!

2. ravioles de rayons
i think this is one of their signature dishes and i have had it both times ive been here! it’s basically a dumpling pasta filled with CHEESE. it may feel like a lot of cheese based on the description but i found every bite to be very flavourful. granted, my friend and i shared this dish so it may be much to get the large portion for yourself unless you’re a big cheese person. but this was so good we finished every last drop of it.

3. benedict eggs
i think this is a staple in every brunch menu and you can’t go wrong with ordering this. the hollandaise sauce mixed with poached eggs on bread it always a combo i love and the ham was good too! the mushroom gives a nice bit of density and saltiness to it as well.

4. iced latte (featuring my lipstick stain 🤡)
a pretty solid coffee that accompanies the rest of the meal. i presume most people don’t come here just for the coffee but i generally liked it and my friend enjoyed their mocha as well!

📍oyster bank, funan first time here after many 📍oyster bank, funan
first time here after many people have recommended me this place and it did not disappoint!

1. spicy salmon don
as a lover of spice, i really liked this one! i think if you aren’t a fan of spice, i can imagine it being a bit much after a while. the salmon sashimi was delicious and fresh and the signature spice mix had a sort of buildable spice where you feel it hit you more as you keep eating tho it was never to the point of overwhelming for me. hits the spot just where i like it hehe.

2. raw oyster and kimchi cucumber oyster
i actually really liked the kimchi cucumber one! it was very flavourful cause it also has some gochujang mixed it which packs a punch. the naked raw oyster was good too (esp if you like oysters) and fresh. and the best part was that it was for $2 during happy hour when you also ordered an alcoholic drink hehe.

3. lemon chuhai highball
this was quite citrusy as the name suggests but was mostly smth to wash down my food. i did find the initial sips to be quite strong in terms of alcohol content but after a while it balanced out better (probably cause of ice melting and diluting the alcohol % in the drink).

i would really wanna go back to also try some of their other dons (especially the mentaiko aburi salmon don) and also their sake!

📍wild honey, mandarin gallery i feel like this 📍wild honey, mandarin gallery
i feel like this is quite an og spot for cafes/brunch options in town. and some of their all day breakfast options are simply yummy and filling that has me coming back for more.

1. tunisian all day breakfast
this is basically a shakshouka with chorizo, eggs and a simply amazing piece of brioche bread. loved every bite of it. the mix of spice and tangy flavours in every bite was delectable. not overly spicy too (if that’s a concern for you). and the bread was chef’s kiss. very soft yet retaining just the right bit of crunch that pairs well with the dish to scoop in or drench in the bits of shakshouka left. quite filling too! the salad it comes with decent and quite fresh as well! you have the option to also convert it to vegetarian if you wanna.

2. princess smoothie
this was a blend of different berries, banana, yoghurt, chia seeds, mint, cinnamon and almond milk. i wouldn’t say the cinnamon and mint tastes were prominent as i could mostly taste the berries, banana and milk. quite smoothly blended as well but this is quite expensive. even tho you’re getting a fair bit of ingredients blended together and it makes a decent non caffeinated option (i chose this cause i had already had 2 cups of coffee at this point and didn’t want more 🥹). i reckon the coffee options would still be more bank for buck and i remember their flat white being decent from past visits.

📍carrotsticks and cravings, stanley st this is 📍carrotsticks and cravings, stanley st

this is a nice cafe that’s located in the cbd and i really liked the brunch options and coffee that they had to offer.

1. signature smashed avo
this is essentially smashed avocado, poached eggs, pomegranate, feta and dukkah served on a sourdough. you have a slice of lemon to squeeze some on your dish if you wish to have that additional sour citric taste that mixes well with the dish. i know this was a popular one and i get the hype cause i really enjoyed myself with this as well! i loved how the dukkah went with the avocado and eggs. each bite was flavourful and would highly recommend this one to anyone having a hard time deciding what to get here.

2. vietnamese chicken salad
honestly, i was curious to see how they did their salads since the pictures looked good and i had high hopes but this wasn’t it for me. the chicken was pretty dry and tho there were some bites that were flavourful especially those with vegetables, chilli, cilantro and mint, the chicken was quite a let down for me so i wouldn’t say this was worth it. but a pretty good portion size nevertheless.

3. iced oat milk latte
oh this was really good! i was in the mood to have oat milk instead of regular milk and really liked how the tastes of the oat milk and coffee blended with each other in each sip.

i am curious to try their smoothies as well but that’s probably for the next visit hehe.

📍oni-kimbap, aperia mall i think this was orig 📍oni-kimbap, aperia mall

i think this was originally an online business that now you can get from aperia mall. i happened to have errands in the area and have popped by a couple of times the past few of weeks and i’ll say the gimbaps are pretty good and worth a try especially if you’re in the area.

1. kani cheese kimbap
you could really taste the kani and the sauce it’s doused in. I generally really like the ratio of rice to fillings of their kimbaps and it’s a pretty good size as well. a roll would be a comfortably filling meal for most people with some space to share one of their sides if you’re up for it! i did try their sweet and spicy sauce once but tbh i didn’t particularly dig it and i think the kimbap is pretty flavourful on its own without needing any dips.

2. jjolmyeon
tbh as much as i’ve explored and tried korean food, i don’t believe i had tried jjolmyeon before this. the sour and spicy sauce is given separately so feel free to add the whole portion (like i did cause i love me some spice) or lesser depending on your spice tolerance or preference. i wont say the sauce is all spice but gives a nice mix of flavour when mixed with the noodles. as for the dish, it’s a cold dish made with chewy, starchy noodles with cucumber, some greens and an egg. it was quite nice and refreshing and i would recommend as a side to share especially if you’re with more people or you have some extra cravings (or tummy space) after your kimbap

3. egg mani (pork) kimpap
this was quite nice as well. it’s packed with egg, mayo, luncheon meat and carrots. i liked the general flavour of it. i rmb seeing a review on ig before i had the kimpap that they’d have preferred if the luncheon meat was fried and tbh I do second that! but all in all, still pretty good!

4. tteokbokki cheese
i was kinda craving for tteokbokki but i feel i would have found much better ones at the korean restaurants at the beauty world area. this was not it for me tbh. the sauce was decent and i did dip some bits of kimpap in just so i didn’t wanna waste it. but overall i wouldn’t say it’s worth it. skip this and try either the jjolmyeon or another side if you’re looking for a side!
📍surrey hills grocer, ion dropped by this plac 📍surrey hills grocer, ion

dropped by this place for lunch and be sure to try to get a reservation if you can! we put our name on the list and waited for about an hour before we got the call that we could come in. personally liked whatever we had and the portions were generous as well! so try to come with as much of an empty tumtum as possible.

1. pulled pork eggs benny
i had a hard time making a decision between this and the crab pasta (which i definitely wanna go back for!). and honestly this hit the spot so well! english muffins came loaded with pulled pork, bacon strips (that gave just the nice bit of crunchiness to the bites), sous vide egg and hollandaise sauce. the pulled pork was sweet and paired very well with the bacon, sauce and egg to make it a savoury, appetising meal. tbh i could have been comfortably full from just this dish alone for brunch. but girl came with a mission in hand so i powered through for dessert 😬😬

2. cereal french toast
before ordering, we actually checked it the portion size was big cause we were comfortably full from our mains. but im glad we powered through after a short break and had our dessert. the bread was fluffy and granola bits, nuts, syrup and berries paired with the ice cream made every mouth so so flavourful. we actually managed to finish it because it was that good. it had the perfect mix of crisp and soft. it’s definitely a sharing portion but be sure to save some space for it and you won’t regret it! hehe

3. iced latte
pretty decent that complemented the brunch but won’t say that was the highlight of the meal or smth i would drop by for specifically.

my friend had their avocado toast and it came with a very generous amount of avocado loaded on toast which was a very enjoyable meal as well! the other bakes on display looked soo good but i didn’t manage to takeaway any tho I snapped pictures of them because they were too good to not window shop haha. but i’ll definitely be back to try some of the bakes and the crab pasta!

i’ve not been on social media as much recently a i’ve not been on social media as much recently as i’ve been dealing with grief and loss in my life. but one of the things that has always brought me joy is coffee. im no coffee connoisseur but i do drink minimally one cup a day. i like my coffees to lean nutty and not so acidic. im no expert when it comes to analyzing the roast level of beans but i find myself generally preferring dark roasted beans that originate from south america. i usually get iced latte or flat white or cold brew white.
these are some of my faves from the year so far:

1. kurasu, the stand orchard (near h&m)
2. neptune, katong
3. dawn, chinatown/clarke quay (love their apple crumble as well!)
4. grids coffee, chinatown
5. sarnies, telok ayer
6. roots, the commons thong lor, bangkok
7. kyo kohee, cbd
8. lunar coffee roasters, cbd
9. alchemist, cbd (they have other locations as well but i mainly go to the one at either hong leong building or cimb plaza)

& honorary mention to baristart tho i have not been able to have their coffee this year so far.

📍the masses, bugis this was my first time back 📍the masses, bugis

this was my first time back at the masses after a couple of years and it was the same item in the menu i got again (i know, i should be more adventurous and try other stuff on their menu). but i really love do like this pasta. they generally seem to be filled so if you wanna drop by having a reservation may be good! and really loved the service from the friendly staff as well 😊

1. c&c&c&c&c pasta
yeap 5cs - crabmeat, chorizo, caviar, confit lemon, capellini. and lobster bisque. i love how the meat portion is generous because this is becoming harder and harder to find with recession times and increases in ingredient prices. and i loved the sauce and how it complemented the pasta noodles. very umami and truly flavourful. this was the main portion size which is honestly pretty filling. you may be able to squeeze in a starter or dessert after if you’re up for it. but we had prosecco with it and were pretty sated by the end of it.

i should really drop by again to give their other menu items a go because they have some pretty interesting dishes that have a fusion spin to them that im curious about. but in the mean time, this pasta has all my heart and tummy love 😋🥰

📍lola’s cafe, holland village i’ve been to 📍lola’s cafe, holland village
i’ve been to this outlet twice now that it’s more accessible to me than the kovan outlet. it’s a nice space where you can chill and while it’s generally filled, i haven’t had too much of a struggle getting seats so far tho i have only dropped by for weekday brunch thus far.

1. shakshuka
oh, i absolutely loved this one. very flavourful mix of spices, tomatoes, bell peppers, feta and garlic oil topped off with the very visually appealing and sumptuous poached eggs. every bite was a burst of flavour and it’s also a very filling, satisfying meal. the dish as it is comes vegetarian and you can also choose to add pork sausages for a few dollars. 😋 would definitely go back for this! 10/10 recommend!

2. tater tots with bacon bits
this was such a generous portion that it’s quite a bit of food for even 2 people! loved the mix of flavour from the bacon bits and sourdough mixed with the crispy tater tots. it was very tasty and you pretty much can’t go wrong with this because what you get is as it’s described in the menu and you can’t go wrong with tater tots hehe (most of the time at least). the staff offered to help us pack the remainder so you could throw it in the air fryer or heat it up to have it for another meal if you can’t finish it!

3. spicy crab rigatoni
i liked that the amount of crab served with the dish was considerable enough that you could enjoy most bites with some meat. the pasta was well cooked and went well with the sauce made. i did enjoy the mix of cheese and spice in this but whenever i think of Lola’s i still wanna go back for the shakshuka so that dish still narrowly beats out this one for me but it’s a very solid seafood pasta dish imo!

4. iced latte
i liked how the coffee came with a memo on the beans and description of the roast. love these extra details hehe. and it was good coffee! i wont say it’s my fav or it’s a place I’ll return specifically for coffee but it compliments the rest of the meal well!

📍columbus coffee, upper thomson i have been to 📍columbus coffee, upper thomson

i have been to this spot many times and have tried a bunch of food from their menu from their pastas to burgers to waffles and i’ll say it is a nice cafe to chill at and have good food at the thomson area. they’re also open for dinner time unlike some other cafes in the area so if you aren’t able to drop by for lunch/tea you can do so for dinner as well!

1. mala chicken burger
i feel like this is a newer entry to their menu and i did enjoy this tbh. it comes with a patty of deep fried chicken doused and sprinkled with some mala with citrus hot honey, jalapeño and cucumbers. i was initially apprehensive about the mix of taste but it was very flavourful with the right amount of crunch, taste and meat in every bite. always love a brioche bun in my burger as well 🤤 and it wasn’t too spicy and had a nice balance of spice and flavour too, imo! (you can request for chilli sauce to dip the patty in for an even extra bit of spice if you wanna 😉)

2. candied bacon waffle
we were almost too full to finish this tbh haha. my fav waffles in sg is probably still creamier but this was a nice mix of sweet and savoury from the bacon mixed with vanilla ice cream and waffles. the waffles were largely crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside which is how i like ‘em but imo it still can’t hold a light to creamier despite being a nice dessert 🥰

3. flat white
i generally like their atlas blend which veers nutty which is how i like my coffees 😋 and their coffee is pretty solid and has never let me down 🤩

📍chilli pan mee, batu road (far east square) i 📍chilli pan mee, batu road (far east square)

i have ordered takeaway from this place countless times and dined in a couple of times as well. love the signature dry chilli pan mee mixed with the sambal chilli, poached egg, minced pork and ikan bilis 😋 super flavourful and the soup it comes with is pretty decent too! if you can’t take too much spice and you’re dining in, do be sure to let them know while ordering that you’d prefer less chilli added to your disk. or if you’re like me and you love yourself spice, you can add on more after served cause they have additional servings at the table 🥹 the takeaway meal is provided with a generous amount of chilli and ikan bilis as well that’s packed separately.

im not a huge fan of the fried dumplings that come with the set meal option and while the pork chop pan mee is pretty decent too, it’s the dry chilli pan mee where it’s at for me. priced at ~$8, it’s decent considering the location is in cbd and you’ll probably leave with a satisfied tumtum 🤩
